Undergraduate Research

Research drives every pursuit within the College of Human Ecology. Innovation in research, design, and practice is one of the key learning outcomes for our students. Each year approximately 500 students work with faculty members on research projects. These include basic laboratory research; clinical, social, and behavioral research with human participants; field-based studies; evaluation of programs, designs, and materials; and analysis of socioeconomic trends using large data sets.  These experiences build on and extend the research-based knowledge and critical thinking skills students gain in classes and provide valuable skills and perspectives that students bring to their careers and passions after Cornell, even if they do not pursue research careers.

2013 Summer Research Stipends for Human Ecology Students , Issue: 483

Human Ecology students who will participate in research with Human Ecology faculty members in the summer of 2013 are invited to apply for a limited number of $4000 stipends. The selection process is competitive. The stipend provides for the student’s own support while they complete 8 weeks of full-time research supervised by a Human Ecology faculty member. Concurrent enrollment in summer courses is not permitted. Applicants must be enrolled in Human Ecology in the Spring 2013 term, in good academic standing, and as an undergraduate Human Ecology student in the Fall 2013 term. Students enrolled in other colleges or Human Ecology students whose research will be supervised by a faculty member in another college are not eligible to apply. Students and faculty mentors must apply jointly, so students should work with a faculty mentor well in advance of the application deadline. For more information see: Summer Research

MIT's Amgen UROP Scholars Program, Issue: 470
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a participant in a summer research program in science and biotechnology – the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program. UROP is MIT’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. The mission of the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program is to provide students with a strong science research experience that may be pivotal in their undergraduate career, cultivate a passion for science, encourage the pursuit of graduate studies in the sciences, and stimulate interest in research and scientific careers. Now entering its seventh year, the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program invites undergraduates to participate in faculty-mentored summer research in MIT laboratories. This intensive nine-week program focuses on cultivating and supporting partnerships between MIT faculty and undergraduates in the areas of science and biotechnology. Students indicating a strong desire to engage in research collaborations within these areas will be selected from colleges and universities from around the U.S., as well as the MIT undergraduate population. For more information on the Amgen-UROP Scholars Program, click on: MIT Scholars Program
Research Assistants Needed, Issue: 463

We are looking for two motivated undergraduate research assistants to assist with research on causal reasoning in exchange for research credit. The hours are flexible, but students will be required to participate in weekly lab meetings (time to be decided) and one weekly meeting with the graduate student leading the projects. Both students must be willing to enroll for at least 2 credit hours of research credit and commit to two semesters on either project. Research tasks include assisting with the design of research materials, collecting data, entering data, and assisting with literature reviews. Both research projects concern how individuals evaluate evidence when deciding what caused an event to occur. One project works with college students, and the other project works with professional program evaluators. For more information contact Wanda at wdc23@cornell.edu.
