How long will the study take?
You will be asked to participate for three days. Each day will take no more than two hours.
What are the risks?
We believe that the risks of participating are minimal, but you have the option to withdraw from any part of the study at any time. Below are a few example of the potential minor risks. A professional phlebotomist will be collecting a small blood sample, but it is possible that mild discomfort and bruising at site of the needle stick may occur. Although very rare, the electrolyte gel being used to conduct the EEG scan may cause mild skin irritation. The gel is water soluble and will be washed away if there are any signs of irritation. ABR has minimal risks as well. All babies already receive an otoacoustic emissions (OAE) hearing test after birth. The ABR test is more sensitive but infants with hearing deficits should already have been detected with standard OAE screening.
Will I be compensated for my travel and time?
For completion of the each of the steps in the study, you will receive a gift card or small gift outlined here:
ABR testing: small gift
Background forms and questionnaires: $10 gift card
First Visit: $15 gift card per infant
Second Visit: $20 gift card per infant
Will I be given the results of my infants’ blood work?
If blood results are abnormal we will inform you within 60 days and recommend you to your medical provider.
Will I be given the results of my infants’ EEG?
The EEG results are collected for study purposes only and cannot be used in any clinical analysis, therefore we cannot give you your child’s individual results. If you would like, at the end of the study, we can provide you with the group results.
Can I drop out at any time?
Your participation is completely voluntary and that you may discontinue the study at any time. We as investigators have the discretion to also ask you to discontinue your participation if we deem appropriate.
Will my data be kept confidential?
Yes, your information will be kept confidential. All data and records will be labeled with a number code for confidentiality and kept in a locked office space. No one except the study investigators will know your number code. For more information please review the informed consent form.
