DEA Portfolio Guidelines

All freshman and transfer applicants applying for Design and Environmental Analysis with an interest in Interior Design must submit the Interior Design Index (PDF). The index is a questionnaire designed to help you tell the Admissions Committee and faculty more about your background and preparation for the field.

The submission of a portfolio is also required for first-year and transfer interior design applicants. Please follow these portfolio guidelines (PDF) so the Admissions Committee and DEA faculty can review your portfolio along with your Cornell application.

If you are unable to print the index and guidelines, please contact our office by e-mail or phone, 607-255-5471.

First-year applicants

A portfolio will complement your formal application and become a part of the evaluation of your qualifications for admission. Portfolios should be sent when you submit the Cornell University Supplement to the Common Application.

The Interior Design index (PDF) is a required part of the application process and must be submitted with your application materials.

Transfer applicants

The Interior Design index and the portfolio will complement your application and become a part of the evaluation of your qualifications for admission. Portfolios and design indexes should be sent when you submit Part II of the Transfer application.

Your portfolio will not be evaluated until we receive your official college transcript(s). Faculty want to understand the course experience that provided for the level of design demonstrated in your portfolio.

Design indices and portfolios should be sent to:
